Discord mic not working: the fix order that actually finds it

Dead mic mid-lobby is a speedrun category, so this page is ordered like one: seven steps, most-likely first, stop when sound comes back. No restarting your PC four times on vibes.

The fix order — stop at the first step that works

1. OS permissions first. Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → allow apps (and desktop apps) mic access. One Windows update can flip this off silently.
2. Hardware sanity. Mic unmuted physically (mute switches on headset cables have ended careers), plugged into a port that shows input in the OS sound panel.
3. Name the device in Discord.
   User Settings→Voice & Video→Input Device→your mic, by name
   Never Default — Default follows the OS into chaos after every replug.
4. Input volume up, then sensitivity manual. Slider right, automatic sensitivity OFF, threshold set so normal speech clears it. Auto-sensitivity quietly gating people out is this page’s single biggest cause.
5. Kill the fights over the mic. Close other apps that grab it (some grab exclusively); in the OS sound panel, disable exclusive control on the mic’s properties if apps keep stealing it.
6. Reset Discord’s voice settings. Bottom of Voice & Video — clears corrupted processing states (echo/suppression/AGC combos) in one click. Re-do steps 3–4 after.
7. Update or reinstall Discord and your audio drivers — the step that fixes whatever the first six didn’t.

If the mic works but sounds terrible

And if the mic died specifically after you added a virtual device (Broadcast, RTX Voice, Sonar), step 3 is your culprit: Discord is listening to the virtual mic while your app chain broke — re-pin the device at whichever end moved.

Why is my mic not working on Discord but working everywhere else?

Usually Discord’s own input settings: Input Device pinned to a dead or Default entry, input volume at zero, or automatic sensitivity gating you out. Steps 3–5 of the fix order cover all three.

Discord shows the green ring but nobody hears me — what gives?

Green ring means Discord receives audio; if the squad hears nothing, suspect server mute, per-user volume dragged to zero on their end, or a voice-processing conflict — step 6’s reset clears the weird ones.

Does Windows block Discord from the mic?

It can and does: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone must allow desktop apps. It’s step 1 for a reason — updates reset it more often than anyone admits.
