Discord Noise Suppression Not Working? Read the Options First

Discord's suppression menu, what sits above and below it, and why toggling the setting eleven times fixed nothing.

BUILD 2026.08.23by the Loadout Audio squad

Discord noise suppression is one layer among several, which is why the setting is so often blamed for problems it did not cause. Discord's voice settings present a Krisp-branded suppression option alongside a standard option and off. That is what the interface shows and what is widely reported; we will not pretend to know what runs underneath it, and you will find no performance figures for it here. The two complaints that fill support threads, that it stopped working and that it keeps switching itself off, almost always come from the layers around it. Which is why toggling that one switch eleven times has fixed nothing.

What the Settings Menu Actually Gives You

Open User Settings, then Voice and Video. The suppression section presents the Krisp-branded option, a standard option, and off. That is the whole menu. Underneath sit the other voice processing switches, including echo cancellation, automatic gain control and automatic input sensitivity, and a surprising share of broken-suppression reports actually live down there. Input sensitivity decides when Discord thinks you are speaking, which looks precisely like suppression misbehaving when it guesses wrong.

Every one of those produces the same symptom from your friends' side, which is why the fix is a pass down the list rather than a wrestling match with one dropdown. It is also why stacking processors, a virtual mic upstream plus Discord's own option on top, frequently sounds worse than either alone. The second one is cleaning a signal that has already had its character sanded off.

When It Keeps Switching Itself Off

The common version: your setting reverts after an update, a crash, or a hop between the desktop app and the browser. Those are separate clients with separate settings, so a preference set in one was never set in the other. Confirm which one you are actually in before you conclude anything reset itself. The second version is a device change. Plug in a headset, unplug an interface, or let the operating system move your default input, and Discord can land on a device whose settings you never touched.

When the Mic Itself Is the Problem

If nobody hears you at all, this stopped being a suppression question. No filter can mute a mic that is already dead, and no amount of switching options revives a device Discord cannot see. Our Discord mic not working guide handles that separately. Confirm you are transmitting first, then argue about how clean it sounds, because the alternative is spending an evening tuning a signal that never left your machine.

A Troubleshooting Pass That Holds

Work downward, not sideways. Confirm the input device Discord has selected is the one you are speaking into, from the dropdown rather than memory. Set input sensitivity manually and watch the bar move while you talk; if it does not move, stop tuning suppression. Then set the suppression option deliberately instead of leaving it wherever an update parked it, and test in a voice channel with one patient friend, not in the settings preview.

If you run a virtual microphone, switch Discord noise suppression off first and let a single processor do the job. Krisp installs as a virtual microphone: you select Krisp Microphone as the input, and its live noise cancellation is desktop-only, Windows 10 or 11 and macOS, processing on-device on the CPU. Our Krisp for streamers page covers that in context, and the free stack roundup lists what else is free. If you also broadcast, the OBS noise suppression and OBS noise gate pages handle that side.

For the base setup rather than the repairs, our Discord noise suppression walkthrough has the steps. GPU-side tools are a separate branch entirely: NVIDIA Broadcast is free but wants an RTX 2060 or better with 8 GB on Windows and runs on the GPU, and our NVIDIA Broadcast setup page covers the install. AMD Noise Suppression is free for AMD GPUs and lives in the AMD Software app. Whichever you choose, choose one and stop, because a stack of three is how you end up sounding like a submarine.

Consoles and Other Edge Cases

Discord on PS5 and Xbox

Console Discord does not offer the desktop voice processing options, so there is no equivalent menu to fix. The remedy is physical: a headset with a better boom mic, positioned closer to your mouth, in a room where the TV is not the loudest object. Anyone telling you to enable a desktop setting on a console has not opened one recently.

Browser Client vs Desktop App

The browser client and the desktop app keep separate settings and behave differently from each other. Suppression working in one and not the other is expected rather than a bug, and reinstalling either one will not merge the two. Set your option in the client you actually open, then check the other before you file a complaint about it.

Never Install a Modded Client

Patched builds and third-party clients promising better audio are not worth your account, and none of them get supported when something breaks at the worst possible moment. Use the official app and the official settings, however boring that sounds.

FAQ

Why is Discord noise suppression not working?

Usually because something else in the chain is the actual fault: the wrong input device selected, input sensitivity set so the channel never opens, a virtual microphone already processing upstream, or a mic that is not transmitting at all. Confirm your input bar moves when you speak before adjusting the suppression option itself.

Where are Discord's noise suppression settings?

User Settings, then Voice and Video. The suppression section sits with the other voice processing controls, including echo cancellation, automatic gain control and input sensitivity. On desktop you get a Krisp-branded option, a standard option, and off. Check whether you are in the desktop app or the browser, since they store settings separately.

What is the Krisp option in Discord?

Discord's interface presents a Krisp-branded noise suppression option next to a standard one, which is what the app shows and what is widely reported. It is not the same thing as the Krisp desktop app, which installs a virtual microphone, offers 60 free minutes a day on a single device with no card, and is verified August 2026.

Does Discord noise suppression work on PS5 or Xbox?

Console Discord does not present the same desktop voice processing options, so there is no setting to enable there. Fix it at the hardware end instead: a closer boom mic, a headset with decent isolation, and less noise in the room. Nothing in the console app replaces what the desktop client does.

Why does Discord noise suppression keep turning off?

Most often an app update, a crash, or a switch between the desktop client and the browser, which store preferences separately. A changed audio device does it too, since a new default input can arrive with settings you never configured. Set the option again on the client you actually use, then confirm your input device afterward.
